character name: Rapunzel
Fandom: Tangled
Timeline: Post-movie
character's age: 18
powers, skills, pets and equipment: Rapunzel's hair had possessed healing abilities, from a magical flower her mother drank to heal herself while pregnant. She had needed to sing an incantation, and then anything in contact with her hair could be healed. Her hair would also glow in the process. However, she lost the wider use of her healing powers when her hair was cut off, and it is now permanently short, and brown instead of golden. In Scorched, Rapunzel will have very limited healing powers: when she cries, her tears will be able to heal people. She will be able to this without the incantation, but the tears must also be from true emotion: happiness or sadness, but no “onions” or anything like that. She won't need an incantation for this, but "intent" is important; she does need to want to heal.
She can be a little physically klutzy, but after hauling Gothel up the tower on her hair for years, as well as swinging and climbing all over the inside of the tower herself, she has fairly good arm strength. Speed doesn't seem to be her strong suit, nor does balance, but she is reasonably flexible. She's no trained fighter, but with her frying pan as a weapon, she is able to defend herself if need be.
She will not be bringing Pascal with her, but she will have a frying pan and be wearing her usual lavender dress and her crown.

personality: Rapunzel is more or less the opposite of what her upbringing might lead on to expect about her. She was raised in a tower, totally isolated from a world she had been taught to fear by her false “mother,” the witch Gothel. So, it seems like she would be a quiet, timid girl. Someone who doesn't really know how to express herself and who would hide even if she did receive the chance to escape her tower. As opposed to, say, someone who would bargain with a random stranger (Flynn/Eugene) to guide her on a journey, following several unfortunate encounters between her frying pan and the poor gentleman's head. But that is just what Rapunzel does. She is, in short, a brave, inquisitive young lady who grows to be a charming princess.
Ever since she was very young, Rapunzel has been a fierce dreamer. For year and years, she watched the lanterns that were released on her birthday, and she longed to go see them. Despite everything she had been told about the outside world, that single wish provided her with enough determination to overcome the fears that Gothel had been trying to grind into her for her entire life. This determination helps her to overcome a great deal of challenges, allowing her to tap into a great deal of strength and creativity within herself to solve problems. It can be nearly impossible to get her to back down from something she wants- As someone who spent her whole life dreaming, it is hard to dissuade her from fighting for her wishes. It isn't the sort of ambition that's vicious or violent; she would never want to hurt anyone else. Rather, it pushes her to struggle, to not allow things to be taken from her easily and to make clever use of the resources she's got. If her goals are for the sake of another person, she'll sacrifice herself without a second thought; she readily choose captivity over the death of the person she has come to truly love.
She is, for the most part, extremely cheerful. When she is happy, you will know it, because she is never shy with her smile. Far from it, she can be incredibly energetic in her joy, up to the point of literally dancing with it. Her good spirits are hard to shake off, and she seems fond of sharing that with others, whether they are children or burly tavern-goers. In fact, whether she would deliberately want to share it or not, she often winds up sharing her happiness simply for the sheer volume of it (both amount and relative loudness of laughter). A very friendly young lady, she gets along with people easily and enjoys simply being with them, certainly a good trait for a princess. She delights in new experiences and loves learning from anything she can, in order to gain a better understanding of the world she was kept away from for so long.
As cheerful as she is, however, it might be more accurate to say that Rapunzel is “emotionally expressive” all around. When she is sad or uncertain, she will have troubling concealing it, and that's when she
tries to conceal it. She can seem a little scatterbrained at times, being somewhat easy to distract thanks to that powerful curiosity of hers. In addition, when she becomes scared, angry, or otherwise upset, she is inclined to react every bit as strongly to that as she does to something that makes her happy; it's just obviously a very different kind of reaction. For example, after first leaving the tower, a shuffling noise in the bushes is enough to make her leap with fright and literally cling to Eugene, and she is so devastated when she believes that he has betrayed her that she becomes resigned to letting Gothel take her back, despite how excited she had been about exploring the outside world before. It can be a little difficult to say exactly what will provoke an emotional response in her, as she very excitable, and, for good or for ill, is given to reacting intensely even if that reaction is negative.
Furthermore, it isn't as though that whole “being raised in an isolated tower since she was a baby” part of her life doesn't still have its effects. However eager she is, she still has a great deal to learn about the world, and the abrupt discovery of her true family was a shock to everything she had believed until that point. Despite her curiosity, it is true that she would often show nervousness when faced with some potential dangers. In some cases, these are just things that anyone would fear, it isn't uncommon for characters to express concern for a rustling bush in the middle of a forest and wonder if it could contain some terror or another. However, Rapunzel specifically states her concern for “ruffians” or “thugs” such as those Gothel had mentioned, which makes clear the potential effect of her “mother's” words on her. Naturally, she still experiences fear, but she has always been good at overcoming that fear to press forward in the world, and learning that Gothel had been deceiving her will only help her with this. Nonetheless, it is also safe to say that Rapunzel will feel lingering insecurities after how her mother restrained her and questioned her capabilities; whether she carries on with what she wishes to do or not, she was raised with both subtle and direct stabs at her self-confidence, and she is inclined to quietly question herself as a result. Can she really do it? Is she really doing the right thing? Thoughts such as that may still pop up to prey on her at times.
Finally, on top of everything else about her, Rapunzel has come to accept her place as princess of the Kingdom of Corona. Her natural friendliness leads her to both get along with people well and her curiosity means she likes to learn about them, truly caring about things like what others want and what their dreams are. She has a certain charisma because of this, as well as her somewhat infectious cheerful tendencies, that makes her well-suited to be a princess. Her role is one she takes on earnestly, and very seriously; now that the kingdom has her back, she truly wishes to be the best princess she can be for the people and for her parents. Because of this, she'll try to carry herself in a fairly dignified manner, sometimes even exaggeratedly so, but she's really too bubbly and fun-loving to be truly “stuffy” about anything. Still, she learns royal protocol with great attention, always trying to shine- and usually succeeding- as a bright and true princess.
why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?Rapunzel has dealt with her share of difficulties in the past in order to escape from her previous life of imprisonment; she has proven resourceful and ultimately capable of handling herself in touch situations. However, a place with as many mysteries as the setting of Scorched would be a good place for her to be forced to more directly confront what fears she does have, as well as allowing her to use her slightly demonstrated ability to think on her feet in new ways and expand her horizons farther than ever to not just survive in this world, but shine in it. Furthermore, for much of her life, she relied on her hair and its abilities, and she will have to grow in new ways without it in the game's setting.

Network Post Sample:[The video screen reveals a huge, green eye. It blinks a few times and partially scrunches with curiosity before the Forge is pulled back to reveal that the eye is, in fact, attached to a face.]Hey, is this thing working? I guess so...
[Her frown is somewhat skeptical, but she thinks she's got it. So, onward! That frown gives way to a smile that seems to fit much better on the young woman's face.]Hello! I'm Rapunzel- well, Princess- well, I guess I'm not in charge of anything here, but-
[She takes a moment, pausing and shaking her head, and her smile takes on a faintly sheepish note.]Just call me Rapunzel, if you want. I am a princess, though. Of the Kingdom of Corona. Which this place... isn't, obviously. It seems like I'm stuck here, but I really can't stay for long... See, I kind of just found my kingdom not to long ago...
[Not to mention her parents. She seems to deflate a little, but she continues.]I need to get back there, as soon as possible. Um, royal duty and all that. So if anyone can help me, I'd be really grateful! Thanks!
Third Person Sample:Rapunzel felt more than a little groggy, rolling herself deeper into the sheets and burrowing her face into the pillow as if that would stop her from stirring further. But no. She really shouldn't sleep so late. It wasn't exactly becoming, now was it? And there was a morning to enjoy!
At least, she hoped there still was, but if she was
this drowsy, it seemed more likely to her that she had overslept. She sighed into the pillow, sat up, and ran a hand through her hair to tame the short strands. As she got her first look at her room, her fingers seemed to get stuck partway through the task.
This was most definitely not her room. She gasped, because she couldn't think of a better reaction.
Leaving the sheets in a crumpled heap on the floor, she scrambled upright and rushed the few steps it took to reach the center of the room. She spun on her heels, taking in everything in a quick glance. No, no, no. This was definitely not right. She had a home now, and this wasn't it, and there was a moment where she felt like she was going to break apart and cry. She was separated from everything she had ever cared about, things she had been separated from before she even knew they existed for her to care about. There was no way this could be fair. Her lips twitched, opening and closing without making a single sound.
She must have been kidnapped. Without even knowing it. Someone must be responsible for this. Well, they had stolen a lot more than they bargained for, she decided- Especially since they hadn't paid anything for the privilege of her company. She was going to march out of this room, unless the door was locked but she'd deal with that later, find the person who had done this to her, and give them a piece of her mind.
And then she would be going home, preferably before she missed tea with Eugene.
Anything else? Nope!
